Lighting Supervisor
REPORTS TO: Head of Lighting
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB FUNCTION:
The Lighting Supervisor works under the direction of the Head of Lighting to manage and coordinate all aspects of lighting & atmospherics within HCT’s three theaters; our 467-seat Proscenium Thrust Theatre, 325-seat Proscenium Theatre and 910-Seat In the Round Centre Stage Theatre. The Lighting supervisor works directly to support and realize the artistic vision of the directors and lighting designers of our 10 broadway style productions in our season of entertainment, as well as our Event Rentals and Theatre Education programs. This position oversees all lighting personnel, including but not limited to: electricians, programmers, board operators, and spot operators. They are responsible for the oversight and maintenance of department equipment and workspaces, i.e. work rooms, catwalks, dimmer/server rooms, and storage spaces.
The Lighting Supervisor manages the daily operations of the Lighting Department under the direction of the Head of Lighting. While responsible for execution and supervision of daily departmental activity, overall departmental leadership, strategic direction, staffing decisions, and operational standards will be in collaboration and under the leadership of the Head of Lighting.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work with designers, directors, production management, and department head to implement and manage design technically.
Prepare & lead the execution of the lighting dept load in/load out from show to show
Produce & maintain Paperwork including plot, channel hook-ups, instrument schedules and hang schedules
DMX addressing & distributing
Dimming and Power Distribution
Equipment/expendables purchasing
Work with other departments to create changeover plan
Attend Staff & Production Meetings
Lighting network implementation & maintenance
Coordinate practical/prop Lighting
Maintain house equipment and inventory
Maintain current plot & paperwork
Oversee Crews
Handles departmental scheduling
Work with Head of Lighting in hiring for various crew positions
Oversee lighting crew day to day
Provide disciplinary action as needed
Any other duties as assigned by the Head of Lighting or Management
The Lighting Supervisor serves as the primary operational manager for day to day department activity but does not independently establish departmental policy, staffing structure, or strategic direction.
DEPARTMENTAL COMMUNICATION & REPORTING:
Maintain consistent and transparent communication with the Head of Lighting regarding departmental operations, staffing concerns, production progress, and equipment status.
Provide regular operational updates and escalate issues impacting personnel, scheduling, safety, or production execution.
Ensure departmental decisions align with established direction and standards set by the Head of Lighting.
Facilitate inter-departmental communication in coordination with Department Head, Designers, production management, technical direction and individual production related departments
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Five years experience working as a Lighting supervisor, master electrician or equivalent schooling
Able to navigate the physical requirements of stairs, ladders, catwalks, and lifts
Ability to work in high places.
Knowledge of an ETC-based lighting rig.
Operating ETC RPU & lightboards.
Paradigm infrastructure system.
Proficient in Net3 Networking, SACN, ARTNet & DMX based communications
Ability to Program, manage, & troubleshoot an entire lighting rig, including control systems, dimming and power management, wireless DMX, moving lights, conventional & LED static units, battery powered practicals, and atmospherics.
Proficient in Vectorworks
Proficient in Lightwright
Proficient in organization and communication
