Contract Scenic Designer – Education Productions

Position Overview

We are seeking a contracted Scenic Designer to support our Education productions. This role is responsible for creating scenic designs that meet the artistic vision of the production team while working within available resources. The Scenic Designer will collaborate closely with the director, creative team, and production staff from the early concept stage through to the final performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend and actively participate in:
     
    • Director’s concept meetings
       
    • Creative team meetings
       
    • All presentation meetings
       
    • Production meetings
       
    • Technical rehearsals
       
  • Develop scenic designs that align with the director’s vision, production needs, and budget.
     
  • Create accurate floor plans and any simple build drawings needed for construction.
     
  • Collaborate with the technical director and shop staff to ensure feasibility and efficient build execution.
     
  • Incorporate available elements from the theatre’s set stock when possible; access will be limited and must be coordinated with the shop team.
     
  • Work within an allocated 40–80 hours of shop time (amount determined by the scope of each production).
     
  • Provide timely design updates and adjustments based on production feedback.
     
  • Ensure scenic elements are safe, durable, and functional for performances.
     

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in scenic design for theatre, preferably in educational or youth productions.
     
  • Proficiency in drafting software (Vectorworks preferred) and ability to produce clear, build-ready documents.
     
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work within time and resource constraints.
     
  • Understanding of basic scenic construction methods and materials.
     
  • Ability to attend all required meetings and rehearsals as scheduled.
     

Contract Details

  • Project-based, with timelines determined by production schedules.
     
  • Compensation commensurate with experience and scope of work.
     
Access to the theatre’s set stock and shop hours as outlined above.
