GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB FUNCTION:

Position Summary

The Video Technician for Hale Centre Theatre provides support for all video and projection needs across our three venues: the Jewel Box Theatre, Centre Stage Theatre, and the Beehive Theater. This position plays a vital role in ensuring high quality visual experiences for theatrical productions, special events, and corporate rentals. Responsibilities include operating and programming projection systems, particularly using Disguise software, calibrating and maintaining projectors, LED walls, servers, and related video hardware, and assisting with content playback and creation as needed. The technician collaborates closely with designers, stage management, and production teams to execute cue-based programming, distribute timecode, and manage video requirements throughout the run of a show. They also coordinate with clients to deliver reliable, visually engaging support for rentals and live events.

Success in this role requires strong troubleshooting skills, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to perform under pressure in a fast paced, production driven environment. Familiarity with tools such as Disguise, Vectorworks, Adobe Creative Suite, and adherence to industry standard safety protocols is preferred. The ideal candidate has at least two years of hands-on experience in video or projection environments and is comfortable working a flexible schedule that includes nights, weekends, and holidays.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Operate and program projection systems, with a focus on Disguise software, to realize the creative vision of the Projection Designer
  • Assist with setup, maintenance, and calibration of projectors, LED walls, video servers, software, and related hardware including cameras, video switches, converters, and playback devices
  • Support content playback and formatting as needed for productions, including integration with cueing systems
  • Prepare and maintain video systems in advance of performances, rehearsals, events, and rentals
  • Coordinate video needs for corporate rentals and special events, including gathering client content, programming playback, and operating video systems during the event
  • Manage timecode distribution and synchronization for video and other departments when needed
  • Operate Disguise systems during performances and events as required
  • Collaborate closely with production teams, including designers and stage management, to meet technical and artistic goals
  • Participate in technical rehearsals, cueing sessions, previews, and provide support throughout the run of each production
  • Troubleshoot video and projection issues in real time and implement quick solutions under pressure
  • Maintain operational records, inventory, and condition of video systems and equipment
  • Stay current with industry practices and new technologies in projection and video
  • Follow all safety standards and contribute to a safe working environment
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors

Qualifications and Working Conditions

  • Minimum two years of professional experience as a video technician or programmer, or a bachelor’s degree in theatre, film production, or a related field
  • Proficiency in Disguise projection software
  • Strong technical knowledge of projection systems, LED walls, video servers, and signal flow
  • Familiarity with Vectorworks and Adobe Creative Suite is recommended
  • Comfortable working with cueing systems, timecode distribution, and show control workflows
  • Ability to support and maintain the artistic vision of the design team while ensuring accurate technical execution
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast paced, production driven environment
  • Strong problem solving skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
  • Knowledge of and adherence to industry standard safety protocols
  • Full time availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Typical schedule is Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturdays from 10:30 AM to 11:00 PM
  • Willingness to work additional or adjusted hours during tech weeks, previews, or production runs
  • Ability to safely lift and carry up to 80 pounds
  • Comfortable working at height, including in catwalks and on ladders
  • Ability to climb multiple flights of stairs throughout the day
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, and move for extended periods, including full day shifts
  • Capable of performing manual tasks requiring dexterity, precision, and physical endurance
  • Able to work in dim or variable lighting and navigate backstage environments
  • Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment when required
