Head of Technical Show Operations

Reports to: Senior Technical Director

The Head of Technical Show Operations leads all technical aspects of run-of-show across three venues, providing technical expertise, expert guidance, and hands-on leadership throughout each production. This role ensures seamless integration of technology and artistry, driving operational excellence while upholding the highest standards of safety, reliability, and efficiency.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS/DUTIES

Responsibilities shall include, but are not limited to the following: 

  • Manages and oversees all technical aspects of run of show, including operational oversight and troubleshooting in all venues.
  • Responsible for show maintenance and oversight of such throughout the run of a show. 
  • Responsible for the hiring of Stage Technicians and Deck Crew assignments. 
  • Responsible for delegating tasks to Stage Technicians and coordinating technician assignments as it relates to run of show, show maintenance, changeover, and special projects.
  • Responsible for the training of Stage Technician staff. Areas of training include but are not limited to: Rigging, Rope Access/Rescue, and show repair related disciplines.
  • Responsible for maintaining consistency of Deck Technician tracks.
  • Coordinates with Stage Management to create and approve Deck Technician run sheets and duties.
  • Leads and organizes evening shifts in the Load In/Load Out process.
  • Responsible for keeping Technician staff staff on-task, on schedule and on budget.
  • Administers and oversees all Stage Technician documentation and protocols, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and maintaining operational consistency.
  • Assist other Departments with setup, strike and restore of show equipment including sets, props, rigging, projections, lighting, sound and facilities.
  • Assist in coordination and supervision of the install and operations of all scenic elements.
  • Complete various administrative tasks for Stage Technicians, such as, but not limited to payroll, disciplinary actions, scheduling, incident reports, overhire etc. 
  • Works with the scheduling team to ensure consistent staffing coverage and scheduling of Stage Technicians.
  • Coordinates with other departments to allocate Stage Technicians and overhire staff in support of operational needs.
  • Maintain a safe working environment at all times by adhering to Hale Centre Theatre safety policies and procedures. 
  • Ensure all pertinent Hale Centre Theatre policies and agreements are understood and adhered to by all show operations staff.
  • Positions require full availability (up to six days a week), including afternoons, nights, weekends, and select holidays implemented.
  • Any other projects as assigned by the Senior Technical Director. 
 

 BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BFA or MFA in Technical Theatre or five (5) years experience or equivalent combination of training, education and/or experience working in professional theatre and large-scale productions and/or touring experience.
  • Experience in theatrical stage carpentry is required with knowledge of current theatrical technology and professional work and safety standards. 
  • A strong working knowledge of mechanical principles.
  • Basic competency in Electrical theory.
  • Strong critical thinking skills are required. 
  • Experience with Rigging techniques and knowledge of rigging safety standards.
  • Proven knowledge of theatrical safety standards. 
  • An ability to work well in a team atmosphere and possess strong leadership skills.
  • Comfortable working independently. 
  • Strong desire to hone existing skills and a willingness to learn new ones. 
  • Highly resourceful
  • Possess efficient problem solving and time management skills. 
  • Demonstrate strong writing, verbal, mathematical, analytical and communication skills. 
  • Working knowledge of Google Suite software.
  • Comfortable working at heights.
  • Successful candidates must be able to pass a drug screening prior to beginning work.
 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Work Experience in Theatrical Rigging and performer flying.
  • ETCP - Rigging in either Arena and/or Theatrical venues
  • SPRAT/IRATA Level 2 or higher
  • Experience managing crews and projects.
  • OSHA30 or equivalent 
  • Pyrotechnics Certifications 
  • Experience with theatrical pneumatic systems
  • Experience or certifications for operating scissor lifts, forklifts, etc.
  • Show Control/Automation experience
  • Welding experience
